ADHD involves differences in how the brain’s dopamine and norepinephrine systems regulate attention and impulse control. The inattentive presentation (formerly called ADD) shows up as difficulty with focus, organization, and working memory. The hyperactive-impulsive presentation shows up as restlessness and difficulty with impulse control. Many people have a mix of both, and it is a legitimate, highly heritable condition rather than a character flaw.
